Self-Discovery Brings Clarity to Your World

Being able to see yourself as you really are by using the exercises and tools within this book might feel like a completely new world. It could feel like going from being legally blind to having 20/20 vision. It is also possible that the impact on you is a more subtle development, akin to going in for a vision check-up and getting an updated prescription. Either way, regardless of whether the impact has been life-changing or only moderately life-enhancing, improving your understanding of self impacts how you see the world.

I regularly coach individuals who enter the coaching process with very modest expectations about gaining any new insights about themselves. They, like my second-grade self who believed she could see perfectly well, believe that they have a fantastic understanding of their strengths and motivations, their values and vision. In sum, they wholeheartedly believe they know themselves well. By the third coaching session, this misconceived theory is usually debunked.

One of my favorite examples of this occurred when I coached a business owner, James, who has Individualization® in his “Top 5 Strengths.” In our first meeting, James reviewed his strengths with me and confessed that he did not see how Individualization was a central theme in his life. James had his own definition of what it meant to be individualistic, and for whatever reason, he did not believe he showed the traits that represented this word. For this reason, I always encourage my clients to read, or re-read, the short definitions of their “Top 5 Strengths” and highlight the phrases that resonate most with them. Although the 34 Strengths that make up the results of Clifton StrengthsFinder® assessment may seem commonplace, the individual definitions may give you an entirely new perspective on terms like Context, Activator, Significance, Self-Assurance, Restorative, Command, and Discipline.

When James reread the definition of Individualization as defined by Gallup, he started to accept that he might have some of the characteristics discussed in the description. For example, he recognized that although he might not remember the first and last name of every employee, he always remembered something special about him or her. He was always able to remember his or her unique story.

He left our first meeting unsure of how this trait impacted others or made him especially capable as a business owner but returned to our second coaching session convinced of the importance that Individualization played is his life – as a business owner, as a husband, and as a father.

James had asked one of his newer employees what he thought of the results he had received after taking the Clifton StrengthsFinder® assessment, and his employee remarked that he wasn’t sure he completely understood each of his “Top 5 Strengths” fully. James chimed in by explaining his mixed feelings about having Individualization in his “Top 5 Strengths.” The new employee remarked, “Oh, I really see that in you! You’re always asking me particular questions about myself that shows you remember my interests and think of me as an individual and not just some employee.
